Diploma in Assistant Nursing

Programme Description:
The Assistant Nurse is an individual who has completed at least 18 months of basic nursing education at the certificate, diploma or higher level, and is competent in the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are critical to nursing practice. The individual must be enrolled and hold current licensure with the appropriate body to practice nursing in her or his country of domicile in accordance with national laws and the professional code of ethics.

The Assistant Nurse Training programme (A.N.T.P) prepares individuals to complement the nursing or medical team in any private or public health care facility. Currently, the duration of the programme is 2 academic years (including the Summer Semesters), and consists of both theoretical and practical components.

Upon successful completion and subsequent licensing by the Nursing Council of Jamaica, the graduates are referred to as Enrolled Assistant Nurses (EAN). Legally, their scope of practice is governed by the Nurses and Midwives Act 1964. This Act and the International Council of Nurses (ICN) recognize these healthcare providers as another category of nurses, who work under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, Registered Midwife or Medical Practitioner.

This programme focuses on developing clinical competencies; therefore, it is designed to facilitate clinical practicum experiences in diverse settings (hospitals, schools, health centres) to allow students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and skills. Students will participate in post-clinical conferences, case studies, field trips and clinical presentations. Upon successful completion of this programme, students will be eligible to sit the Nursing Council’s qualifying examinations for enrolment and licensure.
