Bachelor of science degree in Nursing

Programme Description:

The Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is awarded based on a programme of study comprising a total of 139 credits in courses covering both theory and practice and will be offered on a full- time basis. The programme consist of courses covering both theory and clinical practice.

Each course normally extends over not more than one (1) semester, but in some cases may extend over two (2) semesters. The course is a full time programme over four academic years and three summers (summers commencing in the second year).

The purpose of the programme is to provide the educational and experiential foundation for entry level professional nursing practice and to provide a base on which to build a career through graduate level in specialist areas such as midwifery, nurse practitioner, clinical specialist, nurse administers and educators. The curriculum content is designed to enable students to develop critical thinking, and interpersonal relationship skills as well as receive education and training in biological, social and nurses science. In year 1 students are introduce to social and medical sciences that impact nursing practices.

In year two to four, the curriculum focuses on nursing science and the emphasis moves from classroom to various healthcare settings. Students become expose to clinical skills. At the end of the four years of study students must sit the Regional Examination for Nurses Registration (RENR) and be successful in order to work as a register nurse in Jamaica. They must be licensed with the Nursing Council of Jamaica(NAJ).

Entry Requirements:
Five (5) subjects: Three (3) compulsory subjects: English language or Communication Studies (CAPE), Biology or Human & social Biology or Biology (CAPE), Mathematics or pure Mathematics (CAPE) AND any other two (2) subjects except clothing and textile,
